For parents, there’s no greater feeling than holding their newborn son or daughter in their arms for the first time. There’s just something about that skin-to-skin contact that makes parents go crazy as they begin to feel truly connected to their baby. But you might be surprised to learn that this cherished moment could come at quite a hefty cost.
Redditor halfthrottle was looking over the itemized hospital bill from his son’s recent birth, when he made a startling discovery.
Among the many charges associated with performing his wife’s C-section was a nearly $40 fee for simply holding their newborn son.
Halfthrottle went on to describe how the situation played out in the delivery room. “During the C-section the nurse asked my wife if she would like to do skin to skin after the baby was born. Which of course anyone would say yes to…The nurse let me hold the baby on my wife’s neck/chest. Even borrowed my camera to take a few pictures for us,” the Redditor noted.
Luckily, the happy parents were able to have a good laugh about the entire ordeal. The man couldn’t stop gushing about his experiences with the staff at the hospital.
One labor and delivery nurse discovered the post and was able to shed some light on the reason for the interesting fee. “I didn’t know that hospitals charged for it, but doing ‘skin to skin’ in the operating room requires an additional staff member to be present just to watch the baby,” she said.
